"Superb dining and stunning views"

Eating Out - Guide to where to eat and why

Peruga at Woodheys, Marple Bridge

The spectacular view across Etherow Country Park is just the first reason for dropping superlatives when describing Peruga at Woodheys.

The Marple Bridge restaurant could rely on that stunning vista to guarantee a steady stream of custom but the historic venue also offers superb dining.

Such was the splendour of the surroundings and the quality of service, I momentarily felt I had escaped to the first class lounge of a cruise ship while enjoying my Sunday lunch.

The enormous panoramic windows and ambience created by the two ladies playing subtle easy listening music did little to break my brief fantasy.

Furthermore, the restaurant seemed to create a sense of quality without trying too hard. The staff were unobtrusive but yet only a glance away if needed.

I was half hoping the food, billed as being of British & European in origin, would not live up to the restaurant’s promise – as I did not want too appear too gushing when writing up my review.

Yet, it was straight out of the top drawer.

The red snapper starter embraced such a mix of flavours it left my taste buds immediately craving for the main course.

As for my Sunday roast, I can hand-on-heart say it had the best Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever eaten.

And the desert – too often an afterthought in restaurants – was also an absolute delight. A well balanced fruit crumble, it had a light, biscuity covering and a filling not too sweet – just the way I like it.

You would usually expect to pay through the nose for this degree of quality. But prices at Peruga range from £3-6 for starters, £9-14 for mains and desert cost around £4.

The only reason for criticising the restaurant would be that there is not a great range of options. Although it is certainly a case of quality over quantity.

Opened under new owners since August last year, Peruga has really pushed up the bar for restaurants in Stockport. Let’s hope others follow suit.
